Birthday Nerdiness
January 25, 2007 – 7:27 am | by potsieSeveral folks asked me how I was going to do after work, to celebrate my birthday.
Well, my wife and I are weather dorks. I’m not sure how else to describe us, but we’re fans of studying the weather. We’re registered as amateur weather spotters with Washtenaw County, but we have yet to find a storm/opportunity where we have called in any wind/tree damage.
This relates to yesterday and my birthday how?
Last night a Science Cafe was held at Arbor Brewing, discussing weather/climate change and all things related. We wanted to hear what the scientists and engineers had to say about the topic. The session was part of the College of LS&A’s Theme Year; The Theory and Practice of Citizenship: From the Local to the Global.
The speakers were Perry Samson and Ricky Rood, Professors at AOSS.
The discussion was lively, with a time for folks to discuss what we heard, ask questions, wonder if that hybrid vehicle in the driveway is really helping as much as we would like to think, and just how high a SPF # we will need for future outings.
The one weather class that my wife and I took in college, AOSS 202, was taught by Perry Samson, so it was neat to be able to hear him speak again.
The short version of the discussion wasn’t whether or not our climate is changing, but understanding that it WILL change, and that we need to come up with solutions and ideas to try to mitigate those changes.
On a lighter note, to quote Professor Samson at the beginning of the talk, “We’re toast.”
and that’s how I spent my 40th birthday…
