    Soccer!!!

It’s time for another season of outdoor soccer. My daughters (third and first grade) both play. I am the assistant coach for the third grader team and the head coach, along with my lovely wife, for the first grade team.

I tell friends and family that I try hard not to be the Steve Martin parent from the movie Parenthood, but there are times when I get a bit wrapped up in both teams doing well.

The third graders began their season today.

Thee won by a score of 8-0.

Officially, scores and records are not kept, this is about having fun, learning the sport of soccer, developing skills and learning how to work together as a team.

Unofficially, parents and grandparents on the sideline was overjoyed to watch their daughters and granddaughters take it to the other team. The third graders dominated today. Within our humble, little league, today was a display of everything clicking, the girls passing the ball, of spacing, of a defense that allowed no shots on goal, of one very bored goalie.

Our oldest nailed two goals in the game. Granted, the other team couldn’t muster much of a defense, but I will chalk some of that to the team’s solid offense, keeping constant pressure on the other team, and most importantly, of playing unselfish soccer. The girls saw, very vividly, what working together can accomplish.

Yeah, yeah, I will mellow out. It’s just a game. I mean, what’s more important than the outcome?

    Easy answer.

    “Coach, what’s for snack?”

    Farewell Bo

The Michigan Men’s Glee Club, singing The Yellow and Blue, on the Diag, the evening that Bo Schembechler passed away.

I captured this during a brief memorial service that was held. The quality isn’t great, but I hope any Wolverines out there enjoy it.

I live in the Detroit metro area. Michigan has serious economic issues and only when the people pull together can the problems be overcome. It’s going to take everyone not just democrat or republican. A great place to find out about local Detroit news is GROW DETROIT

Online Poll: Michigan vs. Michigan State

Some of my Sparty friends are already ignoring the game, focusing on the Tigers. Well, I’m a pessimistic Michigan fan (two point conversion, Desmond, tripping, hello?), so “it ain’t over ’til it’s over”

If you’ve read this far, thanks for wasting a few seconds of your life; now please take this poll. I’m testing out an online polling tool and your wasted seconds are helping with my research.

get bent. Hopefully the Spartans share my total rage at the whole situation.

I see Juddy voted twice. There can’t be two people out there who think the Sparties will win, can there?

There’s just too much Lamar, Prescott, Leon “Michael”, Chad, Mario, Steve, et al for The Big Two (John L and Drew) to handle.

Don’t the results depend on to whom you sent this? I talk good ’cause I went to State. And Doddsie, there are even people who live in Australia (moi) who believe that the Spartans will win. When asked what the difference is between AFL, rugby, rugby league and US football (gridiron) I always say that we (US) have bigger balls.
      Cheers

This polling tool seems to be working just fine. Only possible downside is that the current set up doesn’t take into account the possibility (remote, I’m sure) that people might vote more than once. In spite of that, the results so far seem about right to me….Sparty on!

    Fire Up, It’s Saturday!!!

Here are a couple of not-so-great videos of the Michigan Marching Band that I shot prior to the game against Vanderbilt. These were both shot using a digital camera, with it’s “short video mode” rather than a full-fledged video camera; hence the resolution and sound aren’t so hot. There’s also no such thing as steady-shot…

Anyway, today’s the Notre Dame, a match-up of two great football programs.

Maybe these videos will inspire you to ignore the family and watch the game. I will be at a buddie’s wedding and he better be saying his “I do” prior to kick-off.

The first video is the U of M Marching Band pre-game entry into the stadium, one of those hair up on the back of my neck moments. Go Blue!

The second video is from the drumline’s pre-game routine outside Revelli Hall, their practice facility.

    Fire Up, It’s Saturday!

Breaking: Schumacher Retiring at Season End!!!

Michael Schumacher just announced at the Italian Grand Prix post-race press conference that this will be his last season as a Formula One driver.

Speculation was rampant over the weekend about Ferrari trying to force him out, with rumors of him possibly ending up at McLaren, where he started his career.

Michael and Ferrari drove an exceptional race today, bringing his car home P1. Alonso’s Renault suffered engine failure within the last 10 laps, dropping him out of the points, and bringing the championship battle to the fore. A bare two points separate Alonso and Michael.

I will post links to the interview transcripts after they’re posted online.

BBC News story on Michael’s retirement.

Speed has a story online now.

F1Racing.net has a few quotes from Michael’s press conference.

Here is a release from Ferrari about Michael’s retirement.

Competitive gaming trying to earn a berth in the Olympics

    Ahhhhhggggggg!!!!

The person behind this idea needs to be banished to a never-ending session of original Space Invaders.

From cnn.com: Competitive gaming trying to earn a berth in the Olympics

A mouse, keyboard and/or Xbox controller don’t seem like the standard gear of an Olympic athlete, but Ted Owen wants to change that.

Owen, who runs the Global Gaming League (GGL), a media company focused on the lifestyle and culture of gaming, is currently talking with the Chinese government in hopes of bringing competitive video gaming to the 2008 Games as a demonstration sport.

“If the IOC pushed back on us and we had the Chinese government approving us, we would do it anyway,” he said. “We may not have the circles, but we’d do it right by the stadiums and would bask in the glow of the Olympic light. … Everyone wants to watch the best at anything … and it’s time to let people see the best this field has to offer.”

Hey, no, it won’t happen. The closest you’ll an Xbox or PS2 to an Olympic venue is in the wireless lounge at the Beijing airport.
